Bioenergy Europe and Stûv host EU energy officials for Ecodesign and energy-labelling exchange on solid-fuel heaters

According to Bioenergy Europe, Bioenergy Europe and Stûv hosted European Commission energy officials for a technical exchange on solid-fuel heaters. The association published coverage on 27 May 2026. For related market context on this blog, see our note on the 2025 wood pellet market report.

A technical exchange, not a final rule

According to Bioenergy Europe, Bioenergy Europe and Stûv hosted representatives of the European Commission Directorate-General for Energy (DG ENER) on 21 May 2026.

The association published coverage of the visit on 27 May 2026.

The meeting took place at Stûv’s facilities. Stûv is an appliance manufacturer, as described in the association’s report.

What was on the agenda for solid-fuel heaters

According to Bioenergy Europe, the subject was a technical exchange on the ongoing revision of Ecodesign and Energy Labelling requirements for solid-fuel local space heaters.

According to the association, the purpose was to connect policy discussion with the technical realities of appliance design, testing and performance assessment. The hosts also aimed to show how modern biomass heating appliances are developed, tested and improved for efficiency and environmental performance.

Who took part

Bioenergy Europe lists the following participants by name: Niels Ladefoged, Bernardo Martinez, Jean-Francois Sidler, Thomas Duquesne and Ileana Repaci.

How the association frames the discussion

According to Bioenergy Europe, the discussion covered practical implications of elements under consideration. Themes included environmental performance, technological development and consumer access to affordable efficient heating. The association also describes how future requirements can stay ambitious while reflecting technical feasibility and real-world operation.

Bioenergy Europe’s own view — advocacy, not law — is that a well-designed framework can support innovation and regulatory certainty for manufacturers. The association also says such a framework can help accelerate the replacement of outdated, more polluting systems with cleaner, more efficient technology. According to Bioenergy Europe, modern biomass heating matters for renewable heat and building decarbonisation, and requirements should promote innovation while staying proportionate and accessible.
